Important Lessons on Pet Care: A Message for Employers and Helpers

The Case


In August 2024, a domestic helper from Myanmar was charged with the cruel treatment of her employer’s dog, a poodle named “Boyboy.” The incident took place on January 22, 2024, and according to reports:


Physical Abuse: The helper allegedly grabbed Boyboy by the neck, pinned him to the ground, and struck him multiple times with her hand. She also reportedly used a makeshift stick made from rolled papers to hit the dog.

Causing Unnecessary Suffering: It was further alleged that the helper placed her leg on the dog, bearing her weight on him while attempting to bandage him, causing the dog significant pain.

Dangerous Handling: The most severe accusation involved the helper hanging Boyboy by his harness on a balcony railing to “sun” the dog. The helper claimed she did this under her employer’s instructions.


Tragically, Boyboy died later that day. The dog’s owner, referred to as Jason (not his real name), discovered the abuse after reviewing footage from surveillance cameras he had installed at home. Upon noticing unusual behavior and a crack in Boyboy’s skull at the crematorium, Jason checked the CCTV and was horrified to find that his dog did not die of natural causes but was, in fact, abused and beaten to death by the new helper.


Response from Authorities and the Agency


Jason immediately reported the incident to the police and updated the agency responsible for placing the helper. Unfortunately, the agency showed little concern for the seriousness of the case and only asked whether Jason had filed a police report. They subsequently removed Jason from a group chat related to the transfer of the helper, after learning that Jason had reported the case to the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The authorities are now investigating the case, and Jason hopes that justice will be served for Boyboy.

Employers: When assigning tasks involving pet care, ensure your helper understands exactly what is required. Provide clear, step-by-step instructions, especially for tasks that could impact the pet’s health and safety. Regular communication is essential to ensure your helper feels confident in their responsibilities.

Helpers: If you are unsure about how to perform any task, particularly those involving pets, ask your employer for further guidance. It is crucial to fully understand the tasks to avoid mistakes that could harm the pet.


2. Treat Animals with Respect and Care

Both Employers and Helpers: Pets are not just animals; they are beloved members of the family. They deserve to be treated with kindness, patience, and respect. Physical punishment or rough handling is never acceptable and can have severe consequences, including legal action.


3. Understanding the Legal Implications

Employers: Make sure your helper is aware of the legal responsibilities involved in caring for pets in Singapore. Discuss the importance of humane treatment and the serious legal consequences of any actions that could be considered abusive.

Helpers: Be aware that Singapore has strict laws regarding animal cruelty. Any action that causes harm or distress to an animal can result in severe legal penalties, including imprisonment and fines. Always prioritize the well-being of the animals under your care.
